It’s Time to Act on Your Calling

What is your calling?

According to Merriam-Webster the definition of calling is: a strong inner impulse toward a particular course of action especially when accompanied by conviction of divine influence.

So an action, something you do, influenced by God. What is God calling you to do?

Discerning our "calling" can sometimes get confusing. Some people put so much time into trying to figure out what they are supposed to be doing that they don't get anything done. Now, don't get me wrong, it is good to spend some time in prayer seeking God's direction for your life. If you are desiring some clarity about your calling try these simple steps. First, get a pen and a piece of paper or open up a note on your phone. Seriously... this works better if you write it down. You may look back at your notes many times. I have included some suggestions to get your mind flowing!

What is your calling? Write down these and read this post to help you!

Passions

Think about the things you are passionate about. It can be anything and doesn't have to be "church" related. Write them down on your notepad. Have you ever seen a need and thought, "I wish someone would do something about that"? - Write that down.  You will most likely get excited when you talk about this subject and may get random "ideas" about your passion. Write down everything that comes to mind, even if it seems crazy!

Suggestions: helping those in need, disaster relief, music, writing, sports, starting a business, working with youth, etc.

Gifts and Talents

What are some things that you are good at? Think about your career and what you like to do in your free time. You may have a gift or talent that you are very aware of or you may struggle with this one. I have a couple of things that I really enjoy doing but I don't consider myself "talented" in that area. If you feel this way about something, write that down too.

Suggestions: singing, playing a instrument, teaching, crafts, writing, relating to people, helping with something specific, working with the elderly, etc.

Opportunities

What opportunities do you have in your life right now? Do you have a job in which you can grow your talents and gifts? Are you working in a field that you are passionate about? Maybe you have a chance to advance or get a promotion into an area that would really fit into your life right now. Are you attending a church that is needing volunteers in an area that you enjoy working? Take a few moments and think about what is in your life right now and where you want to be. You may have crossed paths with someone that you could build a relationship with that is related to what God is calling you to do. Be aware of what is around you right now and be sensitive in the next few days as you seek God's guidance. You may get direction in a way you never expected or from someone you don't even know.

Action

It is fine to give yourself a little time but don't spend too much time thinking and never "do" anything. I challenge you to ACT on your calling today. Find something you can do that lines up with an area you have written on your notepad. I believe if you step forward in obedience, the Lord will reveal what area He wants you to be in. If you still feel totally lost I encourage you to talk to a friend, family member, co-worker, or your pastor. It is best to find a positive person that you know will encourage you and pray for you.

If the Lord has revealed opportunities to use your passions and gifts to love and serve others through your work, you have discovered your calling. Now it’s up to you to steward those God-given gifts well, so that one day the Master might also say to you, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”  (Called to Create by Jordan Raynor)
